Weaknesses of Malaysia’s Intelligence Force (Special Branch): Challenges and Security Threats

In the past, Malaysia’s intelligence force, particularly the Special Branch within the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), was renowned internationally and recognized as one of the best in the world. Their effectiveness in countering security threats was evident in their success in detecting and assisting the Indonesian government in capturing the militant group led by Nordin Mat Top.

However, the effectiveness of this force has declined significantly. The Special Branch is now perceived as being more focused on safeguarding the interests of certain political leaders rather than fulfilling their primary duty of ensuring national security. This situation is further exacerbated by power struggles within the police institution, particularly for the position of Inspector-General of Police, which has weakened the force’s integrity and objectivity.

Errors in Security Assessment

This weakness became more apparent when the Inspector-General of Police, Razarudin Husin, claimed that the attack on the Ulu Tiram Police Station was carried out by the Daesh group. However, the Minister of Home Affairs stated that the attack was carried out by a lone individual (“Lone Wolf”). This contradiction not only created confusion but also risks provoking a retaliatory response from Daesh, which is based in Iraq, thereby endangering national security.

Another critical failure was in the case of the arrest of an Israeli citizen found in possession of six firearms and live ammunition. The intelligence agency should have had prior knowledge of the presence of such a high-profile individual in Malaysia. More alarmingly, the six firearms found should have indicated the existence of six suspects, yet after a press conference held by Razarudin Husin, the remaining suspects managed to escape. Even more concerning is the fact that information leading to the arrest was not obtained by the Special Branch or Criminal Investigation Department (CID) but instead came from a hotel cleaner who grew suspicious of the suspect.

The Threat of Refugees and National Security

Malaysia has now become a hotspot for foreign refugees, including individuals fleeing from the authorities of their home countries. In a revelation on social media, a Syrian national claimed that several high-ranking military officers from Bashar Al-Assad’s regime were planning to come to Malaysia to seek refuge, as the country is easy to enter and provides employment opportunities. While their presence may not immediately cause disruption, their combat skills could pose a significant threat to national stability if left unmonitored.

The Need for Reform in the Intelligence Force

Studies indicate that the public demands a Special Branch that is more proactive in addressing national security threats rather than being involved in partisan politics or exploiting intelligence assets for personal gain. The use of intelligence resources for power struggles within PDRM, including incidents of character assassination to secure high-ranking positions, is deeply concerning and must be stopped immediately.

Amidst Malaysia’s economic crisis, the police force must be led by individuals who are truly skilled in security tactics or paramilitary strategies. As the first line of defense against national security threats, PDRM must be strengthened with competent leadership that is free from political interference and corruption, and solely focused on the safety of the people and the sovereignty of the nation.

  1. We are inviting terrorist into our country (HAMAS). How does this help in anyway. Any country who promote and supports terrorist and terrorism will have to face this people at a later stage.
